Channel your kids’ energy into the arts this summer! SummerArts offers three weeks of multi–arts workshops for children entering grades 3-9. Each week, students take part in a wide variety of artistic activities with daily sessions in visual arts, music and movement/theater, led by teaching artists who are experts in their field.
In between classes kids can play outside, spend time with friends or work on a project at their own pace. Workshops for older students are more intensive and provide an opportunity for more sophisticated exploration and execution.
The SummerArts program is specially designed to provide kids with a deeply creative, artistic experience. Themes and activities vary each week, giving students the chance to explore art in many forms and diverse media. Many campers are introduced to new artistic expressions and media that they never knew they loved! Classes are perfect for beginners as well as more seasoned creators. Please note that the age ranges are adjusted based on the number of kids enrolled but that we take great care to place each child in an age-appropriate group that best fits that child’s needs.

Week 1- Aug 7-11
Haifa Bint-Kadi | Articulated Pop-Art Portraits
In this fun, multimedia camp students will use a variety of art materials to create a series of self-portraits! Through the course of the week, campers will be guided to add depth to their work- reflecting their emotions and using symbols to demonstrate their interests. They will be vibrant, colorful and some will even move!
Phylisha Villanueva | Storytelling and Poetry bookmaking
Create your first book of poetry while learning basic poetic forms. Historically poets have used zines to bring awareness to their work and sell and dispute their work using just a scanner and a printer. Poets use their poetry to tell stories. Different poetry forms cater to emotions and topics which assist stories in coming alive. During the course of the workshop, we will write, read, and perform poetry. By the end of our time together you will have created a book of your own poetry and stories to distribute how you wish.
Lance Johnson | Graffiti Art
One of our most popular camps is back! Here kids will explore all elements of graffiti art! Campers will use spray paint, stencils, glue, brushes, collage and more to create unique graffiti inspired artwork. Campers will learn new techniques and work to tune into their own creative spirit- connecting with what inspires and motivates them. After working on individual pieces, the week will end with a large scale, collaborative spray-painted mural.
Garrett Neergaard | Story, Costume, and Performance, Yay!
In this fun and exciting camp, students will create a story with characters, develop them into scripts and even design costumes for them! The camp will be designed in way that students will have freedom to explore any or all areas of the production. Some may choose just to focus on writing, directing, costume design or acting (or all the above!). Each day will also include some acting games, engaging the whole group and sharing the fun together. Camp will end with a showcase of the group’s collaborative creation!
Week 2- Aug 14 -18
Kofi Donkor | African Drumming
Come learn the art of African Drumming. Students will learn the names of traditional drums and rhythms. Younger groups will learn the basics and explore the drum through games. Older groups will dive deeper and explore the source and origins of the music and polyrhythms. In this fun camp kids will develop musical skills, learn African culture and grow our communication skills all through the drum!
Joe Tomasini | Mask Making
Inspired by artists and cultures from around the world, students will make their very own masks! Campers will learn about historical masks from Japan and Indonesia as well as be inspired by modern artists such as Paul Klee and Nick Cave. They’ll make their own versions will a wide array of fun materials like – fabric, straw, recyclables, feathers, gems and more! This camp is not to be missed!
Brianna Luciano | Hip Hop Dance
In this class we will review many of the diverse styles of Hip hop dance. Including break dancing, waving, tutting, poses, grooves, trendy dance moves etc. To begin, we will quickly warm up preparing our body and learning an introduction to Hip hop movement though games, history and culture. The core of hip hop is all about having fun so that will be our main priority! Classes will be adjusted for everyone’s level and abilities. We look forward to dancing with each of you!
Evan Bishop | “I am a Hero” Comic Workshop
This creative adventure is designed to challenge the participants (young artists/heroes) to create a superhero in their likeness that addresses a social issue that affects others. They learn graphic terminology and techniques to construct their own comic book. The hope is that during these workshops participants will express their talents and interests while providing a platform for them to share these talents (aka their unique superpowers) with the world.
Week 3- Aug 21- 25
Nicole Lemelin | Modern Dance Explorations
This fun movement class will introduce students to the fun world of modern dance! As students learn how their body moves through space, we will incorporate improvisation exercises that cultivate each dancer’s unique approach to choreography and movement. This will be done through structured play using levels, word association, question/answer and working off of a partner. By the end of the week each student will have the chance to develop a piece of their own choreography that will be included in the final showcase.
Anne Boccato | Stories and Songs from Around the World- younger groups
In this class students are invited to experience traditional songs and tales from around the world told through the magic of everyday objects. A bracelet becomes a princess; a spoon, a terrible monster; as pencils, paper clips and earrings join the cast of magical creatures from another land. This simple storytelling technique leaves room for the imagination and invites young minds to participate, filling in the wide-open spaces with their own creativity and sense of wonder.
We will sing and dance to the music of our neighbors from all corners of the Earth, learning melodies, rhythms and words in many different languages, each story and song a window into the life of people past and present, near and far.
Anne Boccato | Songwriting – older groups
In this weeklong class, students will be able to experience the songwriting process from start to finish. Beginning with an open brainstorm of theme ideas, the class will work together to create characters, backstories, lines, working all the way to writing lyrics, choosing a genre, and crafting the melody, rhythm and harmony for the final song. All in a fun and interactive environment that lets the students drive the direction of their creation together.
Doug Coe | Crochet a frisbee
Crochet is an art where you can take a piece of string, or yarn, and one hook, and create almost anything in a fabric of interlocking loops. We will be having fun learning to crochet a frisbee. It is easy to shape your work as you go. Experiment with colors. The sky’s the limit! These cloth frisbees, when complete, fly very well and are safe to throw in almost any indoor or outdoor environment.
Katori Walker | The Art of Collagraph Printmaking
Explore the magic of printmaking with this camp on collagraphs. Campers will create a thin collage using cardboard- to used as a printing plate for their own unique collagraphs. Students will be encouraged to use their imagination and exploring design techniques. They’ll finish off by binding their prints into a book and working together on a large group mural!
