GRANTS IN ACTION: St. Peter Chanel's student art show

The St. Peter Chanel students and staff would like to thank the River Region Arts and Humanities Council for making their Second Annual Art Show possible through the grant they received.

The SPC Art Show held April 26, 2016 was a huge success. Classes studied artists, such as Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, Wassily Kandinsky, Georgia O'Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, and children's author and illustrator Eric Carle before creating pictures inspired by their works. Students used chalk pastels, texture paintings, collage, watercolors, sculpture and other materials to create their work of art for the show. All students in PK-3 through 8th grade were able to display their masterpiece at the show.

The students were really excited to visit the Art Show to see their masterpieces displayed for everyone to view. An art station was also setup to give the students and families a chance to do some simple drawings to hang up at the show. By the end of the night over two hundred drawings hung on the clothes line display. Art Show patrons were able to leave comments or suggestions about the show. Here are some of the 30+ comments left.

"We like how every grade was unique. We enjoyed finding our pictures and our friends' pictures."

"Very nice and good experience for the children. It is amazing what some of those little ones can do."

"Wonderful pieces of art. Really enjoyed. Our students all did an outstanding job. This is something I really feel we need to continue doing."

"All the paintings were wonderful. What a great event!"

"Loved it. Especially the soap sculptures."

"Very creativel Loved the Scream paintings by 4th grade."

"The do-it-yourself art table was fun."

From new art materials, artists, and art techniques to mounting and displaying the artwork - the art show continues to be a great learning experience for both students and staff. With all the positive feedback, we plan to continue the art show each year. Teachers are already searching for new art projects to try with their class; and we have plans to expand our art station the night of the show to include insect drawings with metallic oil pastels conducted by a local artist.

Thank you again to the River Region Arts and Humanities Council for promoting the arts in our community. We look forward to working with you again.
